Fauquier County unites diverse aspects of Northern Virginia. Although it is part of the DC metro area, Fauquier County is home to quaint villages and towns such as Paris and The Plains. Currently one of the United States’ most rapidly growing counties, Fauquier County was carved out of Prince William County in 1759. It is named after Virginia Lieutenant Governor Francis Fauquier, who reputedly won the land in a game of chance!

Fauquier County also boasts a rich heritage. Once home to the Manahoac tribe, the land eventually passed to the colony of Virginia through a 1722 treaty. During the colonial era, Francis Fauquier, for whom the county is named, entertained college student Thomas Jefferson at his luxurious parties. Later, a number of Civil War battles were fought in the county, including the First Battle of Rappahannock Station and the Battle of Kelly’s Ford.

A number of famous Americans have made Fauquier County their home over the years. Actor Robert Duvall has a residence in The Plains, and George B. Fitch – founder of the Jamaican bobsled team – was recently the mayor of Warrenton. Civil War notables John Mosby, Turner Ashby, and Charles Marshall also lived here, as did Chief Justice John Marshall. Fauquier County continues to attract new residents of all walks of life thanks to its blend of natural beauty, plentiful entertainment, and historical significance.
