Designers Are Making Bold Moves in Bathroom Decor – Should You?

House Beautiful’s 58 Unbelievable Bathroom Remodel Ideas to Inspire Your Next Project features before and after photos of 58 upgraded bathrooms. Designers use a variety of techniques to update these spaces and bring them in line with homeowner’s tastes and personalities. Alterations range from annexing part of an adjoining space to simply changing cosmetic features like wall paper while keeping the original fixtures. However, one thing that becomes obvious is that these designers are not the least bit afraid to make bold statements of color and design. Read on to see if some of these daring moves might be right for your bathroom remodel.

Wild and Whimsical Wallpaper

The dominant tool used to transform the featured bathrooms seems to be wallpaper. And not your grandma’s wallpaper with a subtle pattern of little diamonds or fading florals. These bathroom walls get a brand new look with brilliant hues and striking pictures and designs.

Should you use this trick to breath fresh life into your bathroom and give it some personality? On the one hand, it’s pretty much sure to do just that. Unique wallpaper will define the room’s style and can actually draw the eye away from less attractive features that you may not be able to replace right now. On the other hand, zany wallpaper is usually a love it or hate it item. While you may love it now, you could find it overpowering or dated down the road. With this mix of pros and cons there’s no clear answer to our question. If you’d be OK with changing out the wall paper once it’s out of style or you’re tired of it, go for it!

Expanding the Bathroom

Of course one way to upgrade a small bathroom is to make it larger. The House Beautiful piece showcases a number of bathrooms that were enlarged by taking space from a nearby closet or other room. This can allow you to give the bathroom a whole new layout and add amenities like a frameless glass shower enclosure.

Should you make your bathroom bigger by making another room smaller? This is also a tough question. But in some homes it isn’t even a question at all because this approach is simply not feasible given the floor plan. Assuming you could pull it off, though, consider the following:

•      How much of an impact would this have on the space that would be downsized? Can you do without that closet? Or with a smaller sleeping area?

•      How would this fit into your budget? Would you still have money to finish off the expanded bathroom to your tastes?

•      How much plumbing would you have to move in order to expand the bathroom? How would this impact the price point?

•      How much would the bathroom be improved by the extra space? What will it allow you to add? A double vanity? A custom vanity mirror?

Make Plants a Key Decor Item

Reading the piece, you’ll also see that the addition of live plants can transform a bathroom suffering from bad style or lack of charm. Plants can go in or around the shower, on the vanity counter, or in large pots on the bathroom floor.

Should you add living greenery to your bathroom? Finally, we have a question with an easy answer. Absolutely! Plants are inexpensive and beneficial to our wellbeing. There are tons of resources online to help you choose a plant that’s right for your bathroom’s lighting and humidity. You could even add some glass wall shelves to give yourself more surfaces on which to display them.
